Feet are the base of the whole kinetic chain. If we can optimize healthy foot development for our kids, then we are setting them up for better overall physical health and body awareness.

Same goes for grown ups, too (here are adult shoe recommendations).

What to look for in a kid’s shoe?

  • Bendy and flexible
  • Wide toe box
  • Shoes that aren’t used (so they can form to their own foot/stride)

Why minimalist or “barefoot” shoes help with foot development

Listen, put your kids in those cute ass Jordan’s or Vans on special occasion. But day-to-day, it is best to search for a more minimal shoe.

Benefits of minimalist shoes for toddlers are kids include:

  • Supports natural foot development: those feet are growing quickly! Minimalist shoes allow children’s feet to develop more naturally. The wider toe box encourages the toes to splay and helps foot muscles develop and strengthen.
  • Enhanced sensory feedback: The “bendy” soles enable children to better feel the ground. This sensory feedback can improve balance and coordination, especially as your little one learns to navigate different surfaces.
  • Improved strength and flexibility: Without puffy shoes, the foot muscles need to learn to work harder. This is great at helping keep the foot strong, and can even lead to more flexible feet and ankles.
  • Better gait/posture: It all starts iwth the foot. By allowing the foot to move more freely, it supports better posture and alignment.

Your super tight leggings piss off your pelvic floor (literally).

We all know that tight jeans suck, but tight leggings do too. (Here are some jeans that actually stretch and fit your tummy comfortably too!)

FAVORITE LEGGINGS FOR THE MOM BOD

Okay, anything Paragon is where it is at! Trust me. It is like they *actually* designed leggings for the mom bod and not like a 5’10 super model. If you are on a budget, you can’t go wrong with the last option!

  1. Paragon (USE CODE GETMOMSTRONG to save 10%)

I literally can’t get enough of these leggings. The waistband is long enough that it doesn’t cut your c-section pooch in half. It supports the whole enchilada. They aren’t too tight, but these leggings do offer gentle support, and they have a cute v-seam that makes the backside look so cute.

I, personally, like *anything* SculptSeam plus because it really highlights the glutes (without a wedgie or camel toe). Here are a few options from them, BUT all of their stuff is 10/10 on comfort and style!

$65

Okay, these are my dressy leggings. Same support as the regular leggings, but the cute cut with the slit in the flare to show off my converse has me ready to be anything but a basic pumpkin spice latte drinker. You can dress them up or down. They come in a number of colors, and two inseams. The 31″ inseam fits my 5’3 build perfectly!

$65

2. Colorful Koala

If you are on a budget, these leggings are perfect. The waistband doesn’t cut and they are super soft…like butter! They come in so many colors, two different inseams, and they are under $30!

$25

Why tight leggings suck

When you wear those “tummy control” leggings it messes with the body’s natural breathing system.

I’ll keep it short.

The diaphragm (our breathing muscle) is supposed to push air down into our body as we inhale. This naturally relaxes the pelvic floor. As you exhale, the pelvic floor naturally recoils.

When you are “sucked in” you start breathing UP into your chest and shoulders instead of DOWN into your body. This means your pelvic floor doesn’t get that relaxation with every breath.

This can cause a host of issues.

Also, they are hella uncomfortable (especially if you’ve had a c-section).

Now listen, wearing overly tight leggings for an hour or two isn’t the end of the world. But wearing them day in, day out is when your body is going to be like “nah, girl.”

Remember, YOUR CLOTHES SHOULD FIT YOUR BODY. Not the other way around.

So buy a size up, or opt for a brand that doesn’t smash your tummy.

So you still have a baby bump even though you’re not pregnant?

Maybe you just show bloat way easier since having kids?

This is all pretty normal, since our connective tissue between our six pack muscles often thins and widens during pregnancy. Postpartum, nearly 2 out of 3 women end up with diastasis recti. This contributes to that belly pooch.

I had horrible diastasis recti after my twins and was often asked if I was pregnant, when I very much was NOT pregnant.

These tips were a game changer in helping me feel more confident in clothes while I was healing my diastasis recti.

  1. FIT AND FLARE ROMPER DRESS

You want it to be form fitting on the top and looser on the low belly. This romper dress highlights all the good and flows at the low belly!

Best part about this dress is it has a built in bra with pads, and shorts underneath. Throw it on and go!

2. ROMPERS

A loose romper is the perfect way to let your belly breathe, but to still look fashionable. Throw on a cute flannel or jean jacket and you are comfy and stylish. Here are two great options.

3. One word: O-V-E-R-A-L-L-S!

These are an absolute staple in any mom’s wardrobe. You can dress them up or down. They also make it easy to access for breastfeeding.

I paired these with a cute tank, flower hair clip, and minimalist shoes that are so good for foot and pelvic floor health.

4. OVERSIZED TEE

Not only are oversized tee shirts so comfortable, but they are super cute. Tuck it in a little to hide the bump even more. This color combo is my absolute favorite!

Strong Like A Mother helps you heal your core and improve the so-called “mommy tummy.” And let me just say: IT IS OKAY TO LOOK LIKE YOU HAD A BABY AFTER HAVING A BABY!

Learning to dress your new body so you feel comfortable (and can breathe!) matters.

I know it is hard to feel at home in your new postpartum body. Just remind yourself–your body did an epic thing making a human (or two). If your clothes don’t fit, buy bigger clothes. Our clothes are meant to fit us…not the other way around.

Ready to train with me? Try Strong Like A Mother free for 7 days!

I’m continuing my series, “Clothes are supposed to fit you…not the other way around!” Be sure to check out best stretchy jeans, and comfortable every day outfits, for some more breathable mom-bod fashion.

Not only do we feel better physically when our clothes stretch and move with us, but we also feel better mentally too. Also, our pelvic floor really appreciates it when we can take a full inhale down into our body.

Now listen, I tried on like 1,000 shorts. Dramatic? Maybe, but it didn’t feel far off.

The shorts needed to meet a few criteria:

  • Stretchy, especially in the waist.
  • Full booty coverage even if you are rocking a #slambooty (that’s the name my SLAM app members have given it)
  • Affordable!

(Please note: I do make a small commission off link products)

1. Aerie Daydream Denim Shorts

  • $49.95 (Comes in five colors)

These literally have a stretchy waistband. They are so freaking comfy and like better than maternity pants! Size down one size. They run big!
I paired it with this $17 tank top, and these super cute, wide-toe box shoes.

2. OFLUCK Shorts

  • $25 (Comes in 3 colors)

I jokingly call these my “mullet shorts”, because they are short in the front, but longer in the back. These might be my fave of the bunch. If you are between sizes, size down.

I paired these platform Adidas shoes and this soft bodysuit.

3. 90’s Style Shorts

  • $32 (Comes in 13 colors)

When I say these stretch, I mean…they stretch. I got a size small, and I’m usually between a small and medium.

I wore this with cute hat and this amaze-balls bodysuit.

4. Luvamia Shorts

  • $24 (Comes in 5 colors)

If you aren’t brave enough for white shorts, don’t worry, they come in a few less “live-on-the-edge” colors. These cover the booty, stretch over the thighs and don’t cut into your waist.
I wore the same tank top as above, because it is my fave. These minimalist shoes are so comfy, great for your feet and so cute.

5. Free People Overalls

  • $88 (Comes in 11 colors)

These are perfect for the bloated days, if you know what I mean.

I added a little flare with this viral lace top.

You want to be comfy while you chase kids all day, but also not in your pajamas or workout clothes on repeat? I got you.

These outfits are super comfy, practical and stylish.

Best part…they aren’t too tight, which makes our pelvic floor happy. More on that later. But first, here are some COMFY and affordable mom-life outfits to rock this summer.

1. Romper Dress $27

Okay, it has adjustable straps, is super stretchy, and has shorts underneath. Plus–I mean–POCKETS.

I am also linking the tank, which I love, because it has a built in bra with a little padding (IYKYK).

Comes in 32 colors.

Romper dress

2. Skort – $30

This skort is so freaking soft and it really moves with your body. No digging seams. The cargo looks is so cute. And of course–it has shorts built in.

Come ins this green color and black, from American Eagle.

Oh and this tank top? Also from AE!

Skort

3. Romper Overalls – $20

I love that the straps are adjustable, making it perfect for the short and tall girlies. My husband said I looked like a mechanic in this, but he also said I was the hottest mechanic there ever, so…

Plus, I got so many compliments on it at the airport.

Comes in 7 colors.

And I paired it with this super comfy $15 tank.

Romper overalls

4. Workout Romper – $38

Okay, okay. Technically workout clothes…but I mean…this is elevated. It feels supportive enough that you don’t need a bra. It has a built in liner. Material keeps you cool. It also comes in a million colors.

I got the Free People romper that is similar and I honestly liked this one far better. I’m not playing.

Comes in 19 colors.

Workout romper

5. Strapless Jumpsuit – $53

Show off those Strong Like A Mother program gains in this comfy and breezy jumpsuit. It seriously lets the tummy hang free and airs out all the bits. I feel so strong in this one.  I read all the reviews and the small was great for my 5’3 frame.

Comes in black and white.

Jumpsuit

Shoes to Pair with Comfy Mom Outfits

A natural foot splay is key for the whole kinetic chain, including your pelvic floor. My go to?

  1. Wide Width Converse!

Pro tip: White converse look good with everything and you can order them in a WIDE, making them better for your toe box, which is better for you body.

White converse

2. Whitin Wide Toe Box Canvas Shoes

These minimalist, wide toe shoes are mega cute with all the things, too. And, they are great for your foot health too.

Why Tight Clothes are Bad for You

Tight clothes are terrible for our pelvic floor…and well, our confidence.

I hate to state the obvious, but if your clothes don’t fit properly, it is more than okay to buy a bigger size. Our clothes are supposed to fit our body…not the other way around.

When our waistband is too tight, it cuts off our body’s natural breathing pattern. When we inhale, our rib cage is meant to expand like an umbrella. Overflow of the breath should go down into our tummy. This helps with stress, our digestive system, and even helps bring balance to the pelvic floor.

When we can’t comfortably breathe down into our bodies, we start breathing up into our chests. This creates a stress response, limits the pelvic floor and well, it feels like poo anyway.

Proper breathing

Proper breathing

So free your dang belly! This will help so much with your core, pelvic floor, and your mindset!
